About the Project
“THE CRAFT JOURNEY” translates the value TATRAS places on craftsmanship into space, experience, and product.
For this project, TATRAS invited embroidery artist Pom Zyquita, Head of the Japanese division of HAND & LOCK, the renowned British embroidery atelier founded in 1767. Drawing inspiration from the TATRAS Spring/Summer 2026 Collection, one-of-a-kind art pieces alongside special products incorporating Goldwork, a traditional British embroidery technique were created.
Through stitches applied one by one and materials whose expressions shift with the light, the project reinterprets the colors and structures embedded within the collection.
Reinterpreting the Collection Through Embroidery
The works feature tambour embroidery, a technique in which beads and sequins are individually stitched into place. Reflected within them are the structural qualities of arabesque and geometric motifs, together with the atmosphere of nature and place drawn from shades of turquoise blue and sunset orange.
Goldwork was applied to the menswear pieces to emphasize their structure, while translucent blue sequins were layered across the womenswear pieces, creating expressions that shift with the movement of the body and evoke the shimmer of water.
“Unlike paint, beads do not allow colors to be mixed freely. Although this may initially appear to be a limitation, it can instead become a strength. To achieve this, it is important to understand the sculptural beauty of each bead and the expressions created through reflected light, and to consider how they can be composed in the most beautiful way,” explains Pom Zyquita.
Crafted by the Human Hand
With the Goldwork technique, metallic materials are individually cut with sub-millimeter precision to match the envisioned design, then secured by hand based on the craftsperson’s judgment.
Machine embroidery and hand embroidery are not interchangeable, but possess distinct forms of beauty. Reflecting on the appeal of hand embroidery, Pom Zyquita says, “I find beauty and fragility in the way hand embroidery preserves the traces of irreversible human choices.”
A World That Extends Into Space
To celebrate the project, an event was held at the TATRAS Ginza store, featuring a special spatial installation designed by HANAPSY, led by Toru Matsumoto. Botanical installations and embroidered works overlapped throughout the space, reflecting the world of the collection within the store.
Live embroidery performances were also held at the Ginza and Osaka stores, offering visitors the opportunity to observe Pom Zyquita’s creative process firsthand. During the event period, a customization service was also offered, allowing digital embroidery to be applied to selected items. With dedicated craftsmanship unfolding before them, guests were able to experience the process through which both hand and digital embroidery take form, transforming each piece into a unique work of art.
Bringing together inherited techniques and contemporary technology, “THE CRAFT JOURNEY” reveals, through embroidery, the beauty created by the human hand and new possibilities for TATRAS craftsmanship.
